Round the world Hell is in Norway Lindahl's World Nowhere

A voyage of discovery

Round the world is about one man’s voyage of discovery, of himself, the world and three star hotels.  It is an irreverent look at European, American and Oriental idiosyncrasies and culture.  There are those who will not be offended by it, but I can’t think whom.

They say that travel broadens the mind...but what do they know?

My life as an exile

Hell is in Norway sets out to explode some of the myths surrounding this supposedly just, caring country.  The reality is closer to 1984, and has more in common with the Soviet Union than a modern democracy.  Not surprisingly it has one of the world’s highest suicide rates.

It is an advanced, high tech economy with an electrical system built to the same specification as Albania’s and where, as a result, they have more domestic electrical fires than any other country in Europe.

Scandinavians exposed

I first met Lindahl, or rather saw him as he walked across the grass on his hands.  Due to his less than sober state he was also walking on his feet.  The fact that his head was horizontal, provided him with a somewhat unusual perspective of the world, but then his education in Sweden had no doubt also contributed to his bizarre perspective of "abroad".

The sorry tale of a group of Scandinavians on a cheapie package deal to Gran Canaria including an interesting take on the Battle of Poltava and troglodyte habitations.

Virtual travel

"If I cannot be sure that what I experience when I am awake is real, can I be sure that my dreams are only dreams?"

Nowhere is about the feelings of displacement and of not belonging to where we are.  It is not necessarily about being very far from home, more of not knowing how far we are from home or even not knowing where home is.

Not sure if this will ever be complete, but it seems an apt title to include on www.nomadintent.com

En el tiempo de Franco Book of Dreams 2020 vision Guilt

Almodovar, in Human Flesh, describes a very different Spain under Franco.  For him it was an oppressive, dark and desperate time, for me and others, it was simply the time we lived in, quite oblivious to the politics of the day.  This book tells the story of Carmen, one such disconnected individual, interspersed with episodes of her life in the 21st century shadow lands of Chueca.

A collection of dreams; Freud would have a field day.  Most seem to relate to disorientated travel experiences; worryingly one or two include premonitions of bizarre airport security practices which have actually now been introduced and which seem relatively normal...as airport security goes!

My alternative to Orwell's 1984, set in a post-apocalyptic (post collapse of oil dependent Western civilisation), desolate and anonymous future, where we expend almost our entire remaining resources on "security".  The frightening thing about stuff like this, is that reality catches up and sometimes overtakes me, so it is no longer visionary, but a historical record.

An exploration of morality and responsibility.  Aňa, the heroine or anti-heroine depending on your politics, explores ever more unconventional relationships, unsure of why she is doing it, but desperately seeking something to confirm her identity, define her boundaries...eventually confronted with her judgement for which she is totally unprepared.

Travel sites

Travel photography and travel writing

This family of sites includes general travel writing, travel photography and extracts from my books in various stages of completion.

Most of the travel writing is a supposedly humorous impression of places I have visited or the delusional ramblings of an ageing traveller, some of the books likewise.  Other books are a more serious attempt to come to terms with the injustice of civilisation or a frustrated rant against the machine.

The photography tends to be rather more "consumer oriented", so may seem a trifle clichéd, though you will also find the occasional arty image or something that just seemed like a good idea at the time.

If you are interested in supporting the completion of any of these or commission other travel related projects or even if you just wish to purchase one of the websites, with or without content, please contact me at the email address at the bottom of the page.
